Ticks

Though ticks vary in color and size by their species, they are commonly around 1 cm in length and found in wooded areas. These pests are hard to notice unless they’re attached to a human or animal, and the first sign of an infestation is often the pest itself. Ticks can carry diseases, particularly Lyme disease, which can be deadly if left untreated.

The most common species of ticks in the tri-state area include deer ticks, the American dog tick and blacklegged ticks. Ticks bite and dig into the skin, burrowing to draw blood, their primary form of sustenance. They apply a numbing agent alongside their bite, so it can be easy to not notice one until it has already gorged itself. It is important to check with your doctor if you’ve been bitten by a tick, and take your pet to a veterinarian if you believe it has been too.
