Ranging from brown to the color of their namesake, silverfish are a small insect that can infest homes all throughout the tri-state area. Favoring dark, damp areas, many find that silverfish are prevalent in their bathrooms, basements and attics, though kitchens and laundry rooms are very common areas for infestations as well. These pests are most attracted to damp paper and cloth, and can also be found in storage areas, garages and sheds.
Silverfish are most commonly detect on actual sight of the insect. They are quite small, generally ranging from 12 to 19 mm in length, and are preyed upon by other insects, including centipedes, earwigs and spiders. They are mostly nocturnal and can move very quickly, sometimes being mistaken for cockroaches. These pests also reproduce quickly, making them difficult to completely eliminate without professional assistance.
